Residents of a small German town were sent into panic after mistaking a statue of Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei for a real body.
The life-size sculpture of a dead-looking Ai was lying face-down in front of large glass windows in an art gallery. Passers-by on the street were shocked by the mock corpse and alerted police.
"Several people had already called within days of the exhibition going up", said Peter Steger from the police office in Bad Ems, the town where the work can be seen.
Chinese artist He Xiangyu said his sculpture was intended to praise Ai's efforts to expose corruption and censorship in the Chinese government.
Ai was detained without charge for 81 days earlier this year in a move that drew heavy criticism from Western governments.
